Identification of Pre-1950 Synthetic Organic Pigments in Artists’ Paints. A Non-Invasive Approach Using Handheld Raman Spectroscopy

چکیده

There is little information on the actual use of early synthetic organic pigments (SOPs) in art objects, especially those from before 1950. Their presence can, however, pose a challenge to conservation because their chemical composition, as well lightfastness and sensitivity solvents, are often unknown. Here, study non-invasive identification SOPs historic pre-1950 varnished paint-outs artists’ materials manufacturer Royal Talens presented. The paints were analysed using handheld Raman device. Spectra evaluated by recording spectra same samples with benchtop instrument. This demonstrated that oil approach possible rather straightforward. device allowed us identify fourteen eight pigment classes. Besides occurrence expected known this time period, there also some surprising results, like detection triarylcarbonium PG2 PB8, monoazo Mordant Yellow 1.

Identification of organic colorants in fibers, paints, and glazes by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Organic dyes extracted from plants, insects, and shellfish have been used for millennia in dyeing textiles and manufacturing colorants for painting. The economic push for dyes with high tinting strength, directly related to high extinction coefficients in the visible range, historically led to the selection of substances that could be used at low concentrations. But a desirable property for the...

FROM BECKMANN TO BASELITZ – TOWARDS AN IMPROVED MICRO-IDENTIFICATION OF ORGANIC PIGMENTS IN PAINTINGS OF 20th CENTURY ART

Today, synthetic organic pigments play a major role as colorants of excellent light-fastness in artists' paints. Their analytical determination in paintings gains steady importance with respect to attribution and studio practice of certain artists as well as dating and authentication. Synthetic organic pigments have extremely varied chemical structures and properties such as colouring strength,...

Paints and Pigments

Paints have been manufactured since prehistoric times, but until recently they were highly expensive and thus were mainly used for artwork. It is only since the nineteenth century that houses have commonly been painted. Today paints are used for colouring and protecting many surfaces, including houses, cars, road markings and underground storage vessels. Each of these different applications req...

Automatic Identification of Artistic Pigments by Raman Spectroscopy Using Fuzzy Logic and Principal Component Analysis

This work offers an automatic identification system of Raman spectra of artistic pigments. The proposed methodology is based on a fuzzy logic system, and uses principal component analysis to reduce redundancies in data and the correlation operator as an index of similarity between two Raman spectra. Moreover, as sometimes pigments are used in mixtures by artist, the designed system is able to r...
